Top Tips for Motorhoming in Scotland This Summer

Atholl Estates are delighted to be welcoming back guests this summer, particularly our motorhome and caravan guests! At our estate, Blair Castle Caravan Park, we have an array of options for our guests. From camping pods to static caravan holiday homes to our woodland lodges and of course, areas for motorhomes and caravans.

We want to offer our guests some top tips to ensure that they are travelling responsibly when exploring Blair Atholl and the rest of Scotland this summer:

Use official campsites or parking areas

Here at Atholl Estates, our caravan and motorhome areas are of the highest standard. We are based at the entrance to the Cairngorms National Park and, by parking your motorhome with us on your trip, you are helping preserve Scotland’s natural landscape. Not only this, but by using our hard-standing electric and fully served pitches, it’s even more convenient for you.

Be aware of your size 

Driving a motorhome or towing a caravan can be difficult if you haven’t done it before. Because of this, it is best to take extra precautions to ensure the safety of you and everyone else on the road. Be extra cautious on windy roads, making sure to slow down at bends and corners. To save yourself any surprises of roads that might not be suitable for your vehicle, making sure to plan your route ahead of time.

Dispose of your waste responsibly 

We know this is undoubtedly the least fun part of your trip, but it’s essential. We must keep our nation’s landscapes as clean and beautiful as possible to ensure generations to come can enjoy Scotland the same way we do today. Here at Atholl Estates, we have several discreet chemical disposal points and motor home waste disposal points close by to your parking area. We also recommend that you do not put non-biodegradable items into greywater drains. A lot of the drains in rural Scotland are rather old and can block very easily.

Pack for all weather conditions

If you already live in Scotland, you will know first-hand how adverse the weather can be –one minute the sun can be splitting through the trees, and the next it is hailstones! A little bit of rain never hurt anybody but, heavy rainfall, snow and ice can cause potentially dangerous driving conditions. To ensure you are prepared for whatever the Scottish weather throws at you, make sure to pack some emergency essentials. We recommend a shovel, some warm clothing (yes, even in the summer) and some extra food and water just in case you fall victim to the unpredictable weather changes Scotland often gives us.
